SPECIALTY MSK PRACTICE
SHOULDER PAIN, INJURY & PERFORMANCE
Mastering the Shoulder™ Series has been specifically designed to provide leading information and skills based on specialty MSK practice for shoulder disorders.
These courses are focussed on offering key technical skills, treatment methods and creating predictable outcomes for many shoulder complaints.
Developing the MTS™ Series has been a 10 year process of improving clinical diagnostics and interventions over more than 20 years of specialty MSK practice.
Whether your clinical focus is general MSK, or you have a special interest region - specialty MSK practice offers unique clinical insights based on high regional experience, diagnostic creativity and clinically tested treatment options.
My training began at Melbourne University many years ago, with an undergraduate degree in Science, focussed on human anatomy, physiology and pharmacology.
I immediately followed that with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy, a four year course in its day. Undergraduate training in the 90s included one year of full time supervised clinical practice across many streams - ICU, paediatric care, acute neuro, cardiothoracic care, inpatient and outpatient MSK.
During my clinical practice in Australia, I was fortunate to work beside many leading clinicians in the MSK field, including MSK medicine, physiotherapy, osteopathy, rheumatology, sports medicine and radiology. I saw the value of multidisciplinary knowledge and began to realize the opportunities in MSK physio.
I continued my clinical studies with a Master's of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, a two year program of further unraveling and exploration of MSK knowledge and clinical sciences. During this time, I developed my interest in specialty practice, with academic reviews of ACJ pathology, throwing and swimming disorders, special tests of the shoulder and specialization pathways in physiotherapy.
During this time I also attended courses and workshops with notable clinicians and physicians - Watson, Jull, Hides, Hodges, Burke, Margarey, O'Sullivan, Shacklock, and Brukner.. My interest and competency grew and I began to focus solely on shoulder disorders in clinical practice. In Canada & the US, I've attended several multidisciplinary conferences, radiology and pathology symposia, surgical conferences, physiotherapy courses, non-surgical/surgical discussion days, grand rounds and four day clinical intensives.
It has been a steady 20 year build of attending everything shoulder and offering full time, sole practice in shoulder disorders to arrive at the final iteration of the Mastering the Shoulder™ Series. During the development of this teaching program, I've also spent time teaching university undergraduates, with the physio association, conducting symposia, offering night time lectures and hosting hospital grand rounds.
As I continue my career in specialty practice, I am acutely aware of the diagnostic challenges in MSK disorders, the examination and radiology pearls, and the need for advanced skills in patient management.
MTS™ Series is a culmination of the knowledge, clinical application and multidisciplinary learnings I have acquired over 20 years of specialty MSK practice. My interest is to share this with general practice, special interest and specialty MSK clinicians. It's vital to build this knowledge base further, and hopefully inspire more physiotherapists to choose specialty MSK work to benefit our patients, clinicians and the profession.
